ostuni old town is a ancient hilltop citadel, still fortified by the ancient walls. it is regarded as an architectural jewel, and is commonly referred to as "the white city" ("la città bianca") for its white walls and its typically white-painted architecture, it is a monument in its own right. the town's largest buildings are the cathedral, the bishop's palace and a number of palazzi of local aristocratic families. in the surrounding countryside there are typical "masserie", fortified large estate-farms, one of which, san domenico, was once held by the knights of malta.
